Have you ever found yourself unable to focus? Maybe because there are so many competing options, issues, or voices making it difficult. This is where I found myself when deciding what to focus on for my blog this month. With so many situations pulling at my conscious thinking, I needed to quiet myself, calm myself, and make space for clarity. Listen to my inner voice.
Aside from daily life there have been world situations that stand out for me. Some of these are the impeachment hearings, the coronavirus, the 2020 election cycle, and the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and the seven other lives shortened so abruptly. The latter touched me deeply.
As I stood in my stillness what consistently surfaced was “What legacy might one leave behind?”. While thinking about this question, legacy and choices came to mind. Again, I listened to my inner voice.
The definition of legacy according to Merriam-Webster:
1 : a gift by will especially of money or other personal property : bequest 2 : something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor or from the past
While these definitions are accurate, I want to share a meaning that speaks to what we might leave behind as human beings. I believe we have the opportunity to formulate our legacy by the choices we make each moment of the day and over periods of time. We get to choose how we want to be remembered by how we choose to live each day.
I came across this excerpt of an article posted in the Huffington Post in 2011 and thought I would share. It hits what I believe are the important aspects of leaving a lasting life impact.
Know What Matters
To start purposefully creating your legacy, think about the following three questions. I’ve used these questions myself and have given them to my clients to think about and answer. They will rock you to your core. Answer them honestly to create a legacy that matters and endures.
1. Twenty-five years after my death, what, if anything, will those beyond my family remember me for?
2. If I had to give everything I own to a cause (not a person), what cause would that cause be?
3. If I could snap my fingers and acquire an experience or talent, it would be ___________ because ___________.
While on the surface these questions may sound simple, when it comes time to answer them, you’ll realize that each question requires much thought. In fact, most people have to think about the questions for days before really knowing the answers. Remember, it’s not what we leave FOR others that matters; it’s what we leave IN them that matters most. Possessions and wealth do not a true legacy make. It’s about leaving behind the essence of your Authentic Soul. That’s what the world needs from you. So serve others by leaving behind the best and most beautiful parts of you. Today, and every day, create your legacy.

As I reflect on the world’s loss of Kobe Bryant, I wish for us to remember what he gives each of us as he continues to live in us. What resonates most for me is his commitment to excellence, commitment to family, and commitment to living life fully.
May we hold on to those things most dear and live the life we have been given for however long or short this may be. May we live each day with love, laughter, and great joy! With this as our foundation, there is nothing we cannot do.
Energetically,
Sherrie
